The premise of the design is to achieve a total design. The existing European Patent Office is a collection of various buildings without cohesion. This design will restore the links between all buildings. By introducing a campus, all buildings will be on or in the campusroof. The campusroof is the carrier for the other buildings. Broadly speaking, the complex will be:
1. the campusroof
2. the existing old buildings on the north-east side
3. the recent development in the middle of the site
4. the new skyscraper
The existing roof of the garage will be extended over the entire plot. This creates the Campus. The Campus is the place where users can enjoy a beautifully landscaped roof with green, water, lighting and seats in some places. Large voids provide daylight to existing and new buildings under the campusroof. There arises a new plot on which the buildings stand.
Office tower 1 could be built while users continue working in the existing tower. Architecturally office tower 1 is an upwardly winding construction, filled with glass facades. In total it contains 42 stories and is 168 meters high. This will be the tallest building in the Netherlands.
The existing office 2 tower is fully equipped with two new glass facades that enclose the entire building. So within the new glass facades the existing facades stands and will get a new finish.
The central area is newly built and will basically have to undergo no changes. The campusroof is 'cut open' so that this part of the building has sufficient space. A new entrance building on the Veraartlaan provides access for visitors and users.
